It facilitates visualization of organs, bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues within the body with outstanding clarity and is generally used for a doctor to detect and treat certain medical conditions.
You will lie on a motorized table that slides into the CT scanner, which is shaped like a large ring. The machine rotates around you while capturing images. The process is painless, though you may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds to ensure clear pictures. If contrast dye is used, you might feel a brief warm sensation or metallic taste, which is normal and temporary.
Most CT scans are quick, usually lasting 10 to 30 minutes depending on the area being examined and whether contrast dye is used. In most cases, you can return to your normal activities immediately after the scan.
Preparation depends on the type of CT scan. For scans requiring contrast dye, you may need to fast for a few hours. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and remove any metal objects such as jewelry or belts. The diagnostic team will provide specific instructions before the procedure.
CT scans are generally safe, but they use a small amount of ionizing radiation. The exposure is carefully controlled and kept within safe limits. Your doctor will recommend a CT scan only when the benefits outweigh any potential risks. Pregnant women should inform their doctor beforehand.
