When doctors need to see not just what your internal organs look like, but exactly how well they are working, they turn to advanced nuclear medicine. At Modern Diagnostic & Research Centre (MDRC) in Gurugram, we offer Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) scans. This highly specialized imaging test allows our experts to evaluate the functional health of your heart, brain, bones, and other vital organs, providing critical insights that traditional X-rays or standard CT scans might miss.
While an X-ray or an MRI is excellent for showing the physical structure of your body, a SPECT scan is designed to show biological function - specifically, how blood flows through your tissues and organs.
To achieve this, the procedure uses a tiny, safe amount of a radioactive substance called a "tracer." This tracer is usually injected into a vein and travels through your bloodstream, naturally gathering in the specific organ or tissue being studied. A specialized 3D gamma camera then rotates around your body, detecting the signals emitted by the tracer. A computer compiles these signals to create highly detailed, 3D cross-sectional images showing exactly where the blood is flowing and where the organ is most active.
Because a SPECT scan highlights blood flow and cellular activity, it is an incredibly versatile diagnostic tool used across various medical fields:
Heart Health (Cardiac SPECT): Evaluates blood flow to the heart muscle, helping to detect blocked coronary arteries, assess damage after a heart attack, and determine the pumping efficiency of the heart.
Brain Disorders: Pinpoints areas of altered blood flow in the brain to assist in diagnosing conditions like epilepsy, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke.
Bone Scans: Identifies hidden stress fractures, bone infections, or the spread of cancer (metastasis) to the bones long before they would appear on a regular X-ray.
Gallbladder and Kidney Function: Monitors how well these organs are filtering and moving fluids through your body.
Having a SPECT scan is a safe, painless, and straightforward outpatient procedure. Here is what your visit to our Gurugram center will look like:
The Injection: You will receive a small injection of the radioactive tracer. You may feel a slight prick, but the tracer itself is painless and perfectly safe.
The Waiting Period: Depending on the organ being scanned, you may need to wait anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours while your body completely absorbs the tracer.
The Scan: You will lie comfortably on a motorized table that slowly slides into the scanner. The SPECT camera will rotate closely around your body to capture the images. Your only job is to lie as still as possible so the camera can take clear, sharp pictures.
Post-Scan: Once the scan is complete, you can return to your normal daily activities immediately. Drinking plenty of water will help flush the remaining tracer from your system over the next day or two.
Nuclear imaging requires a high level of precision and expertise. We combine state-of-the-art SPECT technology with a team of highly trained nuclear medicine specialists to ensure your results are flawlessly accurate. We understand that medical testing can feel overwhelming, which is why our staff is dedicated to creating a calm, supportive, and efficient environment for every patient.
