Advanced Functional Imaging for Precise Diagnosis

Unlike traditional imaging that primarily shows anatomy (what the body looks like), Nuclear Medicine focuses on physiology (how the body works). By using safe, trace amounts of radiopharmaceuticals, our advanced scanners can detect abnormalities at the cellular level, often long before they are visible on standard X-rays or CT scans.

Our (MDRC INDIA) Nuclear Medicine department is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and strictly adheres to AERB radiation safety guidelines, ensuring accurate diagnostics with maximum patient safety.

We categorize our specialized nuclear imaging into two primary modalities: PET-CT and SPECT (Gamma Camera).

1. PET-CT (Positron Emission Tomography - Computed Tomography)

PET-CT combines the functional, metabolic mapping of a PET scan with the precise anatomical detailing of a CT scan in a single session. This dual-imaging approach is considered the gold standard in modern diagnostics, particularly for oncology, neurology, and cardiology.

Key Benefits:

  • Early detection of malignant tumors and metastases.
  • Accurate staging and restaging of cancers.
  • Evaluation of treatment response (chemotherapy or radiotherapy).

Common PET-CT Scans Offered

Scan Type

Primary Indication / Usage

FDG Whole Body PET Scan

The standard metabolic scan used for comprehensive cancer screening, staging, detecting metastasis, and monitoring response to treatment.

PSMA Scan

Highly specific targeted imaging used for the detection, staging, and restaging of Prostate Cancer.

DOTA PET Scan

Specialized functional scan primarily used for detecting and staging Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs).

DOPA Scan

Advanced imaging utilized for evaluating movement disorders (like Parkinson's disease), specific brain tumors (gliomas), and certain rare neuroendocrine tumors.

FDG Whole Body Triple Phase PET-CT Scan

Combines metabolic PET imaging with a multi-phase diagnostic contrast CT; ideal for complex surgical planning and detailed evaluation of liver, kidney, or pancreatic lesions.

2. SPECT / Gamma Camera (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography)

SPECT imaging utilizes a Gamma Camera to capture emissions from specialized radiotracers administered to the patient. The camera rotates around the body to create detailed 3D images. This modality is highly effective for evaluating the functional status of specific organs, blood flow, and bone health.

Key Benefits:

  • Highly sensitive for detecting bone metastases or hidden fractures.
  • Excellent for evaluating kidney function and drainage.
  • Non-invasive assessment of blood flow to the heart muscle.

Common SPECT / Gamma Camera Procedures

Scan Type

Primary Indication / Usage

Bone Scan

Detects bone metastases, bone infections (osteomyelitis), and stress fractures across the entire skeleton.

Three Phase Bone Scan

Specifically used to differentiate between bone infection (osteomyelitis) and soft tissue infection (cellulitis), and to evaluate painful joint replacements.

SPECT-CT Bone Scan

Combines 3D functional imaging (SPECT) with anatomical imaging (CT) to precisely pinpoint and characterize complex or indeterminate bone lesions.

Thyroid Scan

Evaluates thyroid nodules, hyperthyroidism, goiter, and locates ectopic (abnormally placed) thyroid tissue.

Parathyroid Scan

Localizes overactive parathyroid glands (adenomas), typically in patients with hyperparathyroidism or elevated calcium levels.

Myocardial Perfusion Scan (MPI / Stress Thallium / Sestamibi)

Assesses blood flow to the heart muscle during physical/pharmacological stress and rest; crucial for diagnosing coronary artery disease and previous heart attacks.

Thallium Scan

Used for evaluating myocardial viability (heart muscle health) and sometimes for specific tumor imaging.

MUGA Scan (Radionuclide Ventriculography)

Highly accurate measurement of the heart's pumping efficiency (ejection fraction), routinely used to monitor patients undergoing cardiotoxic chemotherapy.

HIDA Scan (Hepatobiliary Scan)

Evaluates the function of the gallbladder and biliary system; highly effective for diagnosing acute cholecystitis and bile duct blockages.

EC Renogram

A dynamic scan to assess renal blood flow, kidney function, and urinary tract drainage.

Diuretic Renal Scan

Uses a diuretic (like Lasix) during the scan to differentiate between an actual urinary tract obstruction and non-obstructive dilation (hydronephrosis).

DMSA Scan

A static renal scan used to detect kidney scarring (often due to recurrent infections) and to measure the exact percentage of function in each kidney.

GI Bleed Scan

Highly sensitive scan used to detect and localize the exact site of active gastrointestinal bleeding.

Meckel's Scan

Identifies ectopic stomach tissue in a Meckel's diverticulum, a common cause of unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding in children and young adults.

Salivary Gland Scan

Assesses the function and drainage of the salivary glands; helpful in evaluating conditions like Sjögren's syndrome or distinguishing certain tumors (Warthin's tumor).

Testicular Scan

Used primarily in acute scrotal pain to quickly differentiate between testicular torsion (requiring immediate surgery) and infection/inflammation (epididymitis).

Patient Safety and Care at MDRC India

  • AERB Compliant: All procedures are conducted under strict radiation safety protocols.
  • Expert Team: Scans are reported by highly experienced Nuclear Medicine Physicians.
  • Patient Comfort: Our technologists guide you step-by-step through the preparation and scanning process to ensure a stress-free experience.

Note to Patients: Specific preparation instructions (such as fasting or adjusting medications) are required for most Nuclear Medicine procedures. Our clinical staff will provide detailed guidelines at the time of booking.
