Non-Invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), sometimes called Non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS), is a method of determining the risk that the fetus will be born with certain genetic abnormalities. This testing analyzes small fragments of DNA that are circulating in a pregnant woman’s blood. Unlike most DNA, which is found inside a cell’s nucleus, these fragments are free-floating and not within cells, and so are called cell-free DNA (cfDNA).
The reporting time may vary depending on the test type and laboratory processing. Your healthcare provider or MDRC India team can guide you regarding the expected turnaround time.
As per the PCPNDT Act, 1994, fetal sex determination and disclosure are strictly prohibited in India. MDRC does not determine or disclose fetal sex through NIPT or any other prenatal diagnostic test. Violation of the Act is a punishable offence.
NIPT primarily screens for common chromosomal abnormalities such as Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome), and Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome). The screening options may vary depending on the test panel.
NIPT can generally be performed from 10 weeks of pregnancy onwards. Your doctor may recommend the appropriate timing based on your pregnancy details and medical history.
